Into the pit
Settin up the pit in Dayton. As in most modern theaters, the pit floor moves up and down mechanically, but this theater has two floors below stage level, so the pit can go down quite far.
Mark, I'm curious about this theatre technology stuff: is there a guy who calls out, "Pit to move!", and another guy watching in the pit that calls out, "Move pit!" Then, the first guy throws a big lever, and yells, "Pit HO!" while the guy in the pit calls back, "HO pit!" . . . and, and - when the first guy gets the pit where he wants it, he yells out, "Stop pit!" as he throws the big lever back to the "stop" position, and the guy in the pit, when it stops moving calls back, "Pit STOP!" Are they big guys wearing shop-type clothes like you get from a linen service?
You're actually close. The theater has been compared to the military. There's a very clear chain of command, especially among stage hands. But they don't wear uniforms. Dress is extremely casual, although a lot of them wear sweatshirts and jackets with the tour logos.
But I actually don't know that much about stage hands and what they do.

Wow, the theatre, who would have thought?
